Celebs Who Started Out As Models


Many celebrities have used modeling as a gateway to other opportunities in the entertainment industry.  From singers and small-screen stars to some of the biggest names in the movie business, many celebs used modeling as a way to get their names (and faces) out there on their journey to stardom.  Here is a list of some of our favorite models-turned-superstars!

Angelina Jolie

One of the worlds biggest movie stars,  Jolie got her start modeling while she was in high school.  Ironically, her first major role was in the HBO movie GIA, in which she played troubled supermodel Gia Carangi.

Whitney Houston

In the early 1980s, Houston started working as a fashion model after a photographer saw her at Carnegie Hall singing with her mother. She appeared in Seventeen magazine and became one of the first women of color to grace the cover of the magazine.  She would go on to become one of the most iconic singers of all time.

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda started modeling when she was 11 and was featured on three covers of the Sweet Valley High novel series.  She has gone on to fame in shows such as HBO’s Big Love and blockbuster movies like Mamma Mia!

Uma Thurman

Thurman began her career as a fashion model at age 15, and signed with the agency Click Models. Her early modeling credits included Glamour magazine and the December 1985 and May 1986 covers of British Vogue.  Although I personally love her for her role in the Kill Bill movie trilogy, most people now know her for her role in the movie Pulp Fiction, which many critics consider to be one of the greatest films ever made!

Taylor Swift

Before she was an international singing superstar who was know for dishing on her exes in her songs, Taylor Swift modeled for Abercrombie & Fitch as part of their “Rising Stars” campaign.  She has gone on to be one of the most successful musicians on earth and has sold over 40 albums worldwide.

Katherine Heigl

By the time she was 10, Katherine Heigl was working with Wilhelmina Models posing on the covers of magazines and for Sears and Lord & Taylor catalogs.  Although she has gone on to star in a variety of tv and movie roles, her highest profile role to date has been that of medical intern Dr. Isobel “Izzie” Stevens on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Milla Jovovich

Milla began modeling at the tender age of 12 when famed photographer Herb Ritts photographed her for the cover of the Italian magazine Lei. She has been featured on more than 100 magazine covers, including all the major fashion magazines in the US.  She has also been part of campaigns for Banana Republic, Christian Dior, Gap, Versace, Calvin Klein, DKNY, Coach, Giorgio Armani, H&M, and Revlon.  As an actress, she has starred in several movies including He Got Game, The Fifth Element, and the Resident Evil movie series.

Cameron Diaz

Before becoming that actress who was every teen boy’s crush, Cameron Diaz got her start as a teen model.  She signed a modeling contract with Elite Model Management at age 16 and appeared in advertisements for Calvin Klein and Levi’s.  The following year, at age 17, she was featured on the cover of the July 1990 issue of Seventeen magazine.  She went on to star in hugely popular movies such as My Best Friend’s Wedding, There’s Something About Mary, and Charlie’s Angels.


Raven is a celebrity who truly had an early start in the modeling business.  As an infant, she worked for Atlanta’s Young Faces Inc. modeling agency and was featured in local print advertisements. At age two, she worked with Ford Models in New York City and appeared in ads for Ritz crackers, Jell-O, Fisher-Price, and Cool Whip.  She began her singing career at the age of seven, when she signed with MCA Records and recorded the hit single “That’s what little girls are made of”.  She has gone on to star in popular shows like The Cosby ShowHangin’ With Mr Cooper, and That’s So Raven.

Kirsten Dunst

Dunst began her modeling career when she was three years old and she signed with Ford Models and Elite Model Management.  She would go on to become an internationally-famous movie star with roles in films such as Interview with the Vampire, Jumanji,  Bring It On, and  Spider-Man.

Sofia Vergara

Vergara was discovered by a photographer while walking on a beach in her native Colombia.  The exotic beauty has gone on to become one of the highest paid actresses on tv from her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on ABC’s Modern Family.
